Refuge: The World.
Refuge is a fully developed world or continents, islands, jungles, plains, forests and deserts, at least in my mind. Most of what you find on this page is background I developed back in 1996-97, and see no reason to change.
Taran: Mostly South Eastern Sextant, straddling equator.
Third largest continent on Refuge and home of the Tarakesh Empire. Connected to the Ahnkar Continent and the K'ellysis Subcontinent by land bridges.
Area where most of the people from Africa and the Middle East, as well as some eastern Europeans, were translocated during the crossing.
Area: Approximately 16,880,000 Miles Square (Slightly smaller than Asia).
Highest Elevation: Mount Lashaka in the Dagger Range: 46,726 Ft. (14.377 Meters).
Maisma (Black Swamp)
An ancient area of swamps, lakes, rivers, streams, and fens situated on the course of the Mais River. The southern border of the swamp is near to the
Dragon Mountains, while the swamp extends north to the border of Thebos and covers the eastern triangle of Nigeras. The swamp is the home of many
deadly creatures, not the least of which are large Carnisaurs, enormous Crocodiles and Crocodile Snapping Turtles, poisonous snakes, as well as many
deadly supernatural creatures. Pirates and brigades, broken men with no love of the Empire, also make their homes on the outskirts of the swamp, and it
is rumored that the Jewish Underground has numerous safe sanctuaries within the swamp. Scattered tribes of Goblins and Lizardmen, tribes that hate all
not of their own, also prowl the swamps in their flat boats, taking heads and filling stewpots with the remains of intruders. There appears to be an
animating force within the swamp, thought by some to be evil, by others to be neutral, only concerned with its own safety and existence. But whatever the
alignment, the swamp entity seems to have no love for Bothar or the forces of the Tarakesh Empire. No force of the Empire, large or small, has ever
penetrated more than fifty miles into the swamp and returned to tell the tail. Hot, extremely humid, stinking of rotting vegetation and death in general,
while teeming with vibrant life, this describes this largest of Refuge's swamps.
Area: 465,000 Mi2 (1,190,400 Km2) (1.74X Texas).
Sea of Sand:
Great Desert in the northernmost section of the Taran Continent. Outlying areas are scrub land capable of supporting life, while the huge center section is
a a sea of wind swept dunes devoid of life, with the exception of the Split Mountains which carry an oasis of scrubland through the center of the Sea of
Sand, and the smaller range 200 miles to the south. The Jewish Underground is said to be entrenched in these Mountains, and sometimes will launch raids
on Tarakeshian interests from out of the great desert. Three ancient cities reside in the area between the two ranges, cities that took advantage of natural
springs rising from some of the few areas where the bedrock is exposed under the massive covering of sand. High Elves, the original occupants of these
cities, still occupy Lashahr and Alahar, while it is rumored that Jewish refugees occupy the city of Genehar. No Tarakeshian expedition, large or small,
ground or air, has been able to penetrate far into the Sea of Sand. One reason might be the constant desert wise patrols of the Jewish Underground, but
another surely lies with the presence of a large community of Golden Dragons that live in the Split Mountains, feeding on the animal life of the enormous
scrublands. These include at least three dozen adult dragons, and at least one Great Wyrm matriarch. with a large reservoir of magic resources. Giant
Scorpions and Basilisks also inhabit the desert, making it among the deadliest places on Refuge. Area (Not including border Scrubland): 1,300,000 Mi2.
(3,328,000 Km2). Including Scrubland: 2,000,000 Mi2 (5,120,000 Km2) (2/3X Continental United States).

(2,439,680 Km2) (4.07X Texas).
The large central jungle of the continent, dense and almost impenetrable. Some magical force is at work here, and death magic is not welcome in the
teeming life of the jungle. Thought by some to be the center of Life of the Planet Refuge, just as the Mountain circle of Horganapor is thought to be the
center of Death on the planet. A huge network of rivers penetrates the jungle, most emptying into the Maisma Swamp. Filled with a variety of flowering
plants, broadleaf rainforest and teeming with animal life, it is also the home of many groups of Sylvan Elves who wage a constant guerilla war on the
surrounding Kingdoms of the Tarakesh Empire, as well as members of the Jewish underground who aid and are aided by the elves. Very few permanent
villages within the jungle, as moving the villages aids the rebels in their fight against the Tarakeshians. In fact, the Tarakeshian Military has lost over a
million troops in these jungles over the last thousand years, and it is called Death among the Tarakeshians who are stationed near the Jungle. Not
considered a part of the Empire by anyone who has enough brains to look past the ever mounting flows of propaganda. Called the Hidden Jungle because it
is hidden within the center of the Tarakeshina Empire. 1,512,000 Mi2 (3,870,720 Km2) (3X the size of Indochina). This is the area that the jungle
encompassess that is not claimed by neighboring nations. The complete extent of the jungle is over 2X this.

The planet Refuge is so named because first it was the Refuge for the Elves, Dwarves, Gnomes, Orcs and Halflings from the depredations of Humans. It was named Larlasane in the High Elfin Language, Dramina in the Dwarven, both meaning essentially the same thing, Safe Home, or Refuge. This name was picked up and translated by the new Human arrivals ten thousand years later. This is a Gaia planet, living and sentient (just as are all the major celestial bodies of this universe). It embodies the spirit of life, death, order and chaos.

Sun (solius) The main star (Solius) is an F9 Star in the middle of its life. It would mass 5.944875218 X 10(30) in Earth's Universe. But under the physical laws of Refuge's Universe, it only masses 3.921656818 X 10(30). There is a little more of a bluish cast to the light of Solius than Sol's. Other facts are related below:
Diameter: 1,212,000 Miles.
Gravitational Constant: 1.725529 x 10(20).
Effects of Sun on Refuge:
Apparent Size: 1.2 Sols as seen from Earth.
Sunrise and Sunset: Solius appears a deeper red and much larger during sunrise and sunset than Sol does on Earth, due to the thicker and deeper blanket of atmosphere.
Daytime: More blue light and less red than on Earth due to the spectrum of the Sun. Shadows are therefore deeper when total sunlight is excluded (and the eyes of mortals take longer to adjust to the darkness), and conversely shadows are more diffuse nearer the sunlight.
Auroras: Auroras are much brighter and more energetic than on Earth, due to the more energetic sun's particles hitting the strong magnetic field.
Sunspots: There is an eight year cycle of sunspot activity, sunspots having an effect on the magical auras of space and the heavenly bodies. During peak periods of sunspots, the forces of magic are stronger, but more erratic and much harder to control. Teleportation wormholes are also more unstable and unsafe for transport of living creatures.
Lunas The largest moon of Refuge and a living world in its own right. The Refugian month is based on the orbit of Lunas.
Diameter: 4,539 Miles.
Volume: 4.896413479 X 10(10) Mi2 (1/5.328566329 Earth's volume).
Surface Area: 64,724,729 Mi2. 36,245,848 Mi2 Water (56%), 28,478,881 Mi2 Land (44%). (1.637X Asia).
Surface Gravity: .627 G
Atmosphere: .80 at sea level.
Orbit: 292,666 Miles at .84866 Miles/Sec.
Orbit Time: 25.02859424 Days. Full Moon every 25 Days, 0r 16.088 Times per year on an average. Advances a day every 34.97207829 Days, Or 2,475.483421 Seconds per Day (41.25 Minutes).
Apparent Diameter: 1.72 Luna's.
Tidally locked to Refuge in 2/3 resonnance., always showing the same face.
Average surface to surface seperation: 283,996 Miles.
Closest Possible Approach to Dahras: 110,371 Miles.
Closest Possible Approach to Cirus: 153,128 Miles.
Effects on Refuge: Can completely eclipse the star during solar eclipses. Raises tides as much as 30% more powerful than Luna does on Earth. Much higher albedo (about 20 times that of Luna) as well as a larger size, means this Moon is very bright in the sky, providing a beautiful, silver-blue light across the nighttime landscape.
Dahras The middle moon of Refuge both in size and distance. An airless globe made of basaltic rock.
Diameter: 1,483 Miles.
Orbit: 179,284 Miles at 1.084 Miles/Sec. Completes one orbit in 12.000285 Days. Full every 12 Days, or 33.52 times a year on average. Advances 24.673248 Seconds per Day, changes over to new day every 8.724186713 Years (3508.77193 Days).
Surface Area: 6,909,270 Mi2.
Apparent Diameter: .987 Luna's.
Tidally locked to Refuge, always showing the same face.
Average surface to surface seperation: 172,142 Miles.
Closest Possible Approach to Cirus: 41,274 Miles.
Closest Possible Approach to Lunas: 110,371 Miles.
Effects on Refuge: Can add and subtract considerably to the tides caused by Lunas, as well as create strong tides of its own. When full, it sheds about the same light on Refuge that Luna does on Earth.
Cirus The Smallest and closest moon of Refuge. The Refugian week on most calendars is based on the orbit of this moon. A lifeless rock made up of highly reflective material (3X that of Luna).
Diameter: 897 Miles.
Orbit: 136,820 Miles at .84935 Miles/Sec. Completes one orbit in 7.99993929 Days. Full every 8 Days, or 50.27 Days a Year on Average. Regresses back a day every 40.95524976 Years, 0r 16,471.75095 Days. Loses 5.255834687 Seconds per Day.
Surface Area: 2,527,753 Mi2.
Apparent Diameter: .58 Luna's.
Tidally locked to Refuge, always showing the same face.
Average surface to surface seperation: 129,972 Miles.
Closest Possible Approach to Dahras: 41,274 Miles.
Closest Possible Approach to Lunas: 153,128 Miles.
Effects on Refuge: Can add and subtract considerably to the tides caused by Lunas, as well as create strong tides of its own. When full, it sheds about 75% of the light on Refuge that Luna does on Earth.
Multiple Full Moons Every 24 Days the Moons Cirus and Dahras are both Full in the Same Sky. This is about 16.76 Nights a Year. This is about every third full Cirus and every second full Dahras. Every 25th time this occurs it also happens with a full Lunas.
Every 200 Days both Ciras and Lunas is Full in the Same Sky. This is about 2.011 Nights a Year. Every third time this happens it also occurs with a full Dahras.
Every 300 Days both Dahras and Lunas are full in the Same Sky. Every second time this happens it also occurs with a full Ciras.
Every 600 Days all three moons are full in the Sky, or about once every 1.49 Years. This night is Known as Life's Moons, and is the Easiest Night to call up angels. Conversely, it is also the night when Werebeasts are the most Invincible.
Demons' Night also occurs every 600 Days, exactly the opposite of Lifes' Moons. This is when there is not even a sliver of a moon in the sky. It is the easiest night to call up demons, creatures of the night can wander from their normal haunts, and Vampires are almost invincible.
So, on average, there are:
50.27 Full Cirus' a Year.
33.52 Full Dahras' a Year.
16.088 Full Lunas' a Year. =
99.88 Days a Year with a Full Moon. -
20.781 Double/Triple Moon Nights.=
79.099 Full Moon Nights a Year.
